Leading active holiday specialist, Neilson, has announced that former GB tennis player Mark Petchey will be their tennis ambassador and consultant for the coming two seasons as they launch the Mark Petchey Tennis Programme. Petchey is a leading figure in the tennis community, having coached Andy Murray and appearing regularly as a commentator on Sky Sports and the BBC.

Neilson has brought Mark on board in order to fine-tune and build on the existing tennis offering, which is a key selling point at their eight Beachclubs, across Greece and Turkey. Over the coming two years, he will work alongside Neilson to help bring to life the Mark Petchey Tennis Programme and their joint-vision of enabling everyone, no matter what their level, to have the chance to pick up a racquet and come away from their holiday a more confident player than when they arrived.

This will include spending several days a year in resort, where some lucky guests will have the chance to be coached by and play with the tennis star.

Mark’s involvement will include:

  • Consulting and crafting the overall tennis offering over the next two years, with detailed input on the overarching programme across all resorts. Mark will bring his years of experience as a tennis coach to implement changes that will ensure that no matter what their level, guests can leave the holiday a more confident player. By focusing on details such as how guests are grouped by abilities and vital areas such as groundstrokes and footwork, players will leave knowing their game has improved.
  • A two-day training workshop with Neilson’s head tennis coaches. On the 4th and 5th of April, Mark spent two full days training Neilson’s highly qualified tennis coaches in London, establishing a coaching ethos with them. This will enable them to share the focuses he has worked on with Neilson so they feel well-armed and confident delivering the tennis coaching programme for guests in their resorts.
  • Time in resort, coaching and playing with guests. Mark will spend several days each year in resort, working with the tennis coaches to consolidate the changes. He’ll also lead many of the existing sessions, giving Neilson’s guests the opportunity to experience the coaching that took Andy Murray from top 400 to a top 50 world ranking first hand. Mark Petchey will be at Messini in Greece for three days on the 7th, 8th and 9th June 2016.

Mark Petchey, Neilson’s Tennis Ambassador said: “I’m really excited to be working with Neilson and looking forward to bringing my experience to add to their already comprehensive tennis offering. What’s great about Neilson is that there’s something for everyone: you can be a complete beginner or an advanced player and there will be sessions and opportunities for you. I’m a big fan of encouraging participation at all levels, so this is the perfect partnership!

Tennis is freely available to play at any of Neilson’s Beachclubs, with daily group coaching sessions, split into different abilities available at no extra cost. Junior coaching sessions for children between 8 and 14 takes place during the school holidays and are also included in the holiday cost. Those keen for that extra bit of attention can book one-on-one coaching sessions at an additional cost. Neilson has over 20 coaches across its properties all of whom are qualified by the LTA at level 2 or PTR Level 1 (Professional Tennis Registry) and with a total of 22 courts.

Richard Bowden-Doyle, CEO of Neilson Activity Holidays added: “At Neilson we pride ourselves in going above and beyond to offer our guests the very best in active holidays and this is no exception. Bringing Mark Petchey on board will give tennis that extra edge for our guests when they stay at Neilson’s Beachclubs.
